Understanding stories is an essential part of German lessons. However, students often seem to have problems sympathizing with characters or imagining places. Modern Virtual and Augmented Reality concepts make literary worlds come alive and thereby aid literacy.

In this workshop, participants will discuss the potential and boundaries of virtual and augmented reality in class rooms. Besides showing concrete settings, there will be plenty opportunities to test and play, develop own AR elements for literary works and exploring them in VR.

This Workshop will be in German.

Games have become an important factor in media educational practices. This importance has also transferred to the impact games have in schools. However, one cannot talk of an extensive coverage of media education. In order to distribute established concepts and methods, media educators provide their OER-materials for others to use them.

As part of Hamburg Open Online University, the initiative Creative Gaming and HAW Hamburg developed the OER-platform „Medienkompetent mit Games“ (Media literacy with games), where materials for media educational work with digital games can be found. Employing this project, this workshop focuses on potential, challenges and boundaries of such an open approach. Furthermore, participants have the chance to test some of the concepts themselves.

This Workshop will be in German.

History and society in video games and how to use them in middle school

Many video games are set in historical times. Accordingly, they convey morals and ideas of these times. In school, students are supposed to learn to identify these historical productions and reflect upon those ideas and images, which may be hidden and only visible by looking closely at the setting.

Often, teachers lack the technical and administrative necessities and concepts for classes in order to deal with video games in history class. The research project ‘HistoGames‘ was developed by history didactics, Public History at the University of Hamburg and students to provide examples for classes (middle school level).

This workshop lets participants explore the materials and helps them construct a concept for class. While these concepts will be according to the specific needs and circumstances, there will also be room to discuss improvements, chances and problems.

In order to test the concepts under realistic circumstances, participants are invited to bring their own mobile devices or laptops.

Gaming experience is not required. This workshop will be in German.
