Barlach Halle K

The Barlach Halle K is directly located in the heart of the city and its art scene, right between the Kunstverein, a gallery, and the Kunstmeile. Very close by you’ll find the Central Station and the downtown of Hamburg with its town hall rising up into the sky. Even the threshold of the HafenCity is just a few meters away towards south.

On this central location the visitors of PLAY18 will find the PLAY Exhibition, which holds a multitude of unique games and interactive art.

Freie Akademie der Künste

The Freie Akademie der Künste in Hamburg, founded in 1950, is a non-profit consortium of artists. What distinguishes an academy from other associations of artists is its interdisciplinary character: all the arts under one roof – the opportunity to cooperate, to discuss the limits of the individual arts and to transcend them. The academy can thus be stimulant and catalyst, provoke unusual combinations. An academy does not represent individual arts or artists – it represents the claims of art qua art vis-à-vis society and the state.

Only a minute’s walk away from Markthalle, the academy will host PLAY19‘s advanced training courses.

Jugendbibliothek Hoeb4U

The youth-library Hoeb4U opened in September 2016 and is located on the ground floor of the Central Public Library in Hamburg. Besides books, magazines and CDs, there are movies, tv series and games. The inventory consists of about 18,000 articles of various media.

Special features are music stations, a lounge area, charging bikes for mobile phones, an e-media wall, a photo box and a gaming area with current gaming consoles. Selected items, like a camera, a sewing machine or a hammock, can be lent from the “Library of Things”. Furthermore, there are regular workshops taking place in the DIY room.

Zentralbibliothek

The Zentralbibliothek contains more than 500,000 items of media and is the biggest public library in Hamburg. It is located next to the central station in the former historic main post office. As a modern city library with several locations, the Bücherhallen Hamburg contain more than 1,7 million media in more than 30 languages. Video Games are also part of the inventory.

DanceStation! Choreography meets Video Game

When game meets dance, a fascinating artistic field arises. Also, it is an exciting approach for those occupied with dance, theatre and media education. In this workshop, participants create digital games on stage using choreographic means. They adapt movements from games and put them into a group performance.

No prior knowledge of dancing or video games is required. This workshop will be in German. This is an event by Bundesakademie für Kulturelle Bildung Wolfenbüttel, coordinated by Meike Klapprodt.

Markhalle Hamburg | Festival HQ

The Markthalle Hamburg, formerly used as a market hall for flowers and vegetables, has been established as a centre for various events and live music, often with alternative bands. Part of its history had been the legendary performances of Iggy Pop in the 70s and Depeche Mode in the 80s.

The diverse stages and rooms in the Markthalle will present the visitors of PLAY19 with enough room for workshops, open activities and PLAY on Stage. The Festival HQ will be located there too.
